It all started June 28, 1969, in New York City when New York Police raided a gay club at the Stonewall Inn. This sparked the Stonewall riots which symbolized the beginning of the movement to demand equality for the LGBTQ+ community.

People across the world host parades, marches and other gatherings to celebrate and advocate for equality, representation, inclusion and victories for the movement, like the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015.
